Category A: 11 to 14 Years old

  1. The first movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, or Beethoven.
  2. One of the following:
    • A substantial composition by Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, or any work of the 19th century.
    • A complete work of the 20th or 21st centuries.

    • Note:Concertos are not accepted. Please e-mail competition@nyiaa.org for questions regarding the pieces' lengths.

Category B: 15 to 17 Years old

  1. The first movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, or Beethoven.
  2. One of the following:
    • A substantial composition by Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, or any work of the 19th century.
    • A complete work of the 20th or 21st centuries.
  3. One substantial work, or a collection of the applicant's choice which is in a different style and by a composer other than those represented in the previous requirements.

Category C: 18 to 35 Years old

  1. The first movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, or Beethoven.
  2. One of the following:
    • A substantial composition by Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, or any work of the 19th century.
    • A complete work of the 20th or 21st centuries.
  3. One substantial work, or a collection of the applicant's choice which is in a different style and by a composer other than those represented in the previous requirements.

  4. (Nocturnes, short dances, waltzes, or comparable pieces are not acceptable.)

(Movements of Concertos and Sonatas are acceptable.)

Category B: 15 to 17 Years old

One movement of solo Bach

Two or more contrasting pieces from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Contemporary periods
(Movements of Concertos and Sonatas are acceptable.)

Category C: 18 to 35 Years old

Two contrasting movements of solo Bach

Two or more contrasting pieces from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Contemporary periods
(Movements of Concertos and Sonatas are acceptable.)

All pieces are to be performed from memory with the exception of Sonatas movements.
